According to legend, when the Santa Anas blow, "Anything can happen." Miles (Jack Black) said this, in The Holiday.
Well, the winds have definitely left a mark in my memory this December 1. That night, I heard a huge WHOOSH ka-booom from my patio around 11:30pm. I knew it was one of the pine trees from above my patio. From that moment on, no light in the house for 5 days. Man, that was a blow. Now, when one is without light for that many days, unexpectedly, you notice how much one depends on electricity nowadays. Cellphones nor laptops cannot be charged, home phones die, can't turn on TV, and the room is always dark. Moreover what absolutely sucks is that the frige dies and along go the perishables in it. Since I have 2 friges in the house, it's a great damage when all goes bad. The only things that lived were a few bottles of condiments and salt packed sardines. So remember, those emergency packs that we were required during those elementary and teenage school years actually do come in handy, even for the night. Add some candles and a flash light. Stay off all the electrical gadgets and listen to the sound of the night without any buzzing of the kitchen appliances. It can be nice. Remember though, to move your car into your garage or a tree-free area, cause man, those winds can really do damage that is unrepairable! |
